This course is suitable for:

• Learners should have a minimum NFQ Level 6 qualification (or equivalent experience) and basic IT and numeracy skills

On completion of this course, learners will be able to:

• Understand the Irish BER system and regulatory framework
• Identify dwelling construction types and energy-related features
• Collect accurate building data for BER assessments
• Use SEAI DEAP software to calculate BER ratings
• Produce BER assessments in line with SEAI standards

• Duration: 6 days (08:00 – 18:30)
• Morning break: 10:30am – 10:45am

• Afternoon break: 15 minutes

As per the Domestic BER Training Specification issued by SEAI, and based on guidance received from QQI, the typical learning effort for a Level 6 minor award is 150 hours. This includes:

• Contact teaching hours: 50 to 130 hours
• Self‑directed learning hours: 20 to 100 hours

All applicants must confirm that they meet one of the approved qualification routes before enrolling on the course.

Construction qualification route

• NFQ Level 6 Advanced/Higher Certificate or international equivalent
• Qualification must be in a relevant construction-related discipline, where the BER fundamental skillsets were covered

Construction experiential route

• Have a become a member of a listed professional organisation at a specific grade, gained through an experiential learning route

OR

• 2 years full time and professional relevant experience during the last 10 years in a relevant construction-related environment, where the BER fundamental skillsets were covered

AND

• an accumulation of SEAI approved or accredited awards in a relevant construction-related discipline, where the listed fundamental skillsets were covered

Mandatory Administrative Requirement

A valid PPS Number is required for QQI certification.

Participants should be comfortable with:

• Basic computer literacy
• Interpreting building drawings
• Basic calculations and geometry
• Training & Registration Process

Becoming a registered Domestic BER Assessor involves the following steps:

1. Pre-Qualification Check: Confirm your eligibility with SEAI under one of the approved routes.
2. Complete Approved Training: Attend and complete the 6 day QQI Building Energy Rating Assessment (Dwellings) course (6N0732).
3. Pass the Assessment: Achieve a minimum 70% in the final assessment to successfully complete the course.
4. Register with SEAI: Apply directly to SEAI to become a licensed Domestic BER Assessor.

• Recognised nationally and required for SEAI registration

Learners may progress to:

• SEAI Domestic BER Assessor registration
• BER refresher or non-domestic BER training
• Energy, retrofit and sustainability roles

The course combines theory, practical application and software-based learning to ensure learners can competently carry out BER assessments in practice. Key topics include:

• BER legislation and EPBD requirements
• Dwelling construction and building fabric
• Insulation systems and thermal performance
• Heating, ventilation and renewable energy systems
• Energy performance calculations
• BER methodology and reporting standards
• Practical use of SEAI DEAP software

Practical skills are integrated throughout the programme and include:

• Dwelling survey and data collection techniques
• Interpretation of construction details and services
• Application of professional judgement in line with SEAI guidance
• Completion of BER assessments using real-world scenarios

Assessment is carried out in accordance with QQI standards and typically includes:

• 1 hour MCQ questionnaire completed on the final day of classroom learning days.
• 4 Assignments released during the week with a completion due date the following week.
• A House visit assessment to complete a BER rating for the final course assessment element.
• Candidates are required to achieve a overall minimum grade of 70% in the QQI 6N0732 Domestic BER Training Course

Learners must successfully complete all assessment components to achieve certification.

• Laptop capable of running SEAI DEAP software
• Internet access for software installation and updates
• All learning materials and assessment guidance are provided.

• On successful completion, learners will receive the QQI Level 6 award – BER Assessor of Dwellings (6N0732).
• This award is mandatory for those wishing to apply for SEAI Domestic BER Assessor registration.

Following certification, learners must complete the SEAI registration process, which includes:

• Completion of the SEAI online induction module
• Submission of required documentation
• Agreement to SEAI codes of practice and quality assurance procedures
